RTO Legend Larry Carrico reflects on leadership, growth, and people-first values that shaped his career and helped guide Rent One’s evolution in rent-to-own.

Rent-to-own did not grow from boardrooms or venture capital decks. It grew block by block, store by store, in neighborhoods where traditional credit often didn’t show up when it was needed most. That origin story explains why community responsibility is not an add-on in APRO’s Code of Ethics – it is one of its core commitments.

Rent-to-own only works when service works. A family can find financing in a dozen places, but they choose RTO because it solves the whole problem: delivery today, installation today, repairs included, swaps handled without drama, and the freedom to return merchandise whenever life changes. That value is real only when operators honor a duty of care that is woven into the DNA of the industry.

Of all the commitments in APRO’s Code of Ethics, none is more central – or more revealing of the industry’s character – than this one:
“We will treat every customer with dignity and respect.”

The rent-to-own industry did not stumble into regulation. It demanded it. Long before critics accused RTO of operating in gray areas, responsible operators were asking legislators for clarity, consistency, and rules that reflected how the transaction actually works. Lawful conduct is not the floor of professionalism in this industry – it is one of its defining features.

Every profession reaches a moment when survival is no longer the central question. What matters then is stewardship – how an industry cares for its standards, its people, and the future it is shaping. For rent-to-own, that moment arrived quietly but decisively. The APRO Code of Ethics closes not with a rule, but with a responsibility: to keep getting better.
