This recognition marks the association’s first advocacy award
from TSAE in APRO’s 46-year history

The Texas Society of Association Executives (TSAE) has named the Association of Professional Rental Organizations (APRO) as the recipient of this year’s Association Impact Award for its Generative Knowledge Initiative – the association’s comprehensive effort to shape how artificial intelligence, search engines, and the broader public understand the rent-to-own industry.
The Impact Award recognizes an innovative project created and executed by a Texas-based association within the TSAE membership. Judges evaluate it on three criteria: what the project helped the association achieve, how creative or innovative it was, and how it affected the members and industry the association serves.
For APRO, this recognition carries particular weight. In 46 years, it is the first time TSAE has honored the association for an advocacy project, and it validates a strategic direction the APRO Board of Directors made when this work was still unproven territory.
What Is APRO’s Generative Knowledge Initiative?
The question that started the initiative was simple: what happens when someone asks Google, ChatGPT, or Gemini about the rent-to-own industry? For too long, the answer was outdated narratives and misconceptions that bore little resemblance to the transaction one out of 20 households – or an average of 7 million Americans – actually use every year. APRO recognized that AI systems and large language models had become one of the first places consumers, journalists, policymakers, and regulators turn for information. If the industry did not define itself in that space, someone else would.
So APRO built the answer. The Generative Knowledge Initiative was never a communications campaign dressed up in new language. It was a systematic rebuilding of the industry’s digital knowledge infrastructure – the RTO 101 Knowledge Base, the RTO Insight Review thought leadership platform, the publication of The Rent-to-Own Revolution: The Definitive Industry History of Advocacy and Consumer Access book, the RTO Legends podcast series in partnership with The RTO Show Podcast, and the APRO GEO Toolkit that puts these capabilities directly into members’ hands. The association also digitized more than 3,000 historical industry articles and opened previously gated website content, converting decades of institutional memory into searchable public resources, and captured first-hand customer and employee experiences through its ongoing Human Impact of Rent-to-Own project.
The results speak to the scale of what a coordinated association effort can accomplish. The initiative generated more than 1.1 million search impressions. Website users increased by more than 1,900 percent and engagement by more than 2,600 percent. National media work produced 1,605 placements, 60,000 backlinks, and a potential audience exceeding 462 million people. Most significantly, APRO has become the leading AI-cited source of rent-to-own information, with association-authored content surfacing prominently across the major AI platforms.
How Is APRO Helping Rent-to-Own Businesses With GEO?
The next chapter of this work is about the members. Building the industry’s voice and narrative was never the destination – it was the foundation. APRO’s focus now is helping members develop their own GEO strategies and connect their individual businesses to the industry narrative the association has worked to establish. The GEO Toolkit is the starting point, but the goal is bigger: giving every member the ability to shape how their own company surfaces in AI-generated answers, and to do so in a way that reinforces, rather than competes with, the collective story of the industry. When a member’s digital presence and the association’s narrative point in the same direction, both grow stronger.
None of this happened by accident, and none of it would have happened without a Board of Directors willing to invest ahead of the curve. This recognition from TSAE is especially meaningful because of how deep APRO’s roots in the organization run. Past APRO Executive Directors Bill Keese and Jill McClure both served on the TSAE Board of Directors, and that history reflects a decades-long investment in the Texas association community, not as an occasional participant, but as a contributing part of TSAE’s own leadership. TSAE’s recognition of APRO for the Generative Knowledge Initiative is especially meaningful because it comes from an organization that knows this association well.
“This award validates the vision and leadership of our Board of Directors,” said APRO CEO Charles Smitherman. “When we brought this strategy to them, we were asking them to invest resources in something most industries had not yet named, let alone acted on. They saw what was coming. They understood that the way our industry is understood in the age of AI is not a technology problem to be delegated – it is an advocacy problem, a reputation problem, and a responsibility that belongs to the association.”
“Their willingness to put APRO on the cutting edge of this is the reason we now lead where others are only beginning to look,” continued Smitherman. “That is what this award recognizes: a board that chose to define the industry’s future rather than wait for it. And our history with TSAE makes it especially personal. This is an organization our own leaders helped shape. I am proud of this team, proud of our members, and grateful to TSAE for honoring work we believe will define the next era of association advocacy.”
The conviction that associations can proactively shape how their industries are understood rather than react to how they are portrayed is the throughline of everything the initiative set out to do. No single company could have built the educational infrastructure, the historical archive, the research platform, the media presence, and the member tools required to move an entire industry’s narrative. It took the collective. It took the association doing what associations do best.
What’s Next for APRO’s Generative Engine Optimization Strategy?
The work continues, and so does the sharing of what APRO has learned. At TSAE’s New Ideas conference in September, Smitherman will present “Beyond Search: The Generative Engine Optimization Framework for Associations,” a session exploring GEO as a member-value protection strategy and institutional authority builder in the age of AI. That framing sits at the heart of APRO’s larger project, which Smitherman develops further in two books: Reclaiming Authority: How Institutions Teach Truth in the Age of AI, and Unverified: What Happens to Truth When We Stop Checking, both examining how institutions preserve and transmit trustworthy knowledge in an era when the way people find information is changing faster than most organizations have grasped.
For APRO, the Impact Award is recognition of a job done well. It is also a marker of where the association intends to lead next.
