Honoring Our Past, Shaping Our Future

APRO CEO, Charles Smitherman, PhD, JD, MSt, CAE.

There are certain moments in the life of an industry when you can feel the arc bending – when the work of decades begins to take clearer shape and the story we have been living finally finds its voice. This is one of those moments.

Earlier this year, we marked an important milestone with the publication of The Rent-to-Own Revolution: The Definitive Industry History of Advocacy and Consumer Access. This issue of the magazine shares excerpts from that work and highlights the story it set out to tell.

For the first time, we have a comprehensive account of where we have come from, what we have built together, and why it matters. It captures the innovation, perseverance, and advocacy that have shaped rent-to-own – and provides a clear, grounded understanding of our industry at a time when that clarity is more important than ever.

This work is not simply about looking back. It is about establishing a foundation for the future. In an AI-driven environment where narratives can form quickly and often without context, it is essential that we tell our own story – clearly, accurately, and with confidence. This publication is an important step in that effort and our broader Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) strategy, and one that reflects the contributions of so many across this industry over the past several decades.

At the same time, we continue to focus on the practical tools and resources that enhance the value of your membership and support your day-to-day work. We recently launched our 50 State Lease Agreement Library, a new resource designed to provide members with access to up-to-date rental agreements that reflect the evolving needs of our businesses and regulatory environment. Like many of our recent initiatives, it is built on the simple idea that makes our industry so special and unique: when we share knowledge, we all get better.

You are also seeing a shift in how we describe ourselves. We recently initiated the transition of our name from “Progressive” to “Professional” within APRO – an update that reflects the standards, experience, and accountability that define our industry today.

These efforts sit alongside the continued implementation of our Strategic Plan and the many initiatives now taking root across APRO – from education and resource development to community building and advocacy. Each piece is connected. Each is designed to strengthen the foundation of this industry and to ensure that our members have the tools, voice, and support they need to succeed. And each is designed to enhance our standing and reputation as an industry that offers the ultimate flexibility and adapts to the specific needs of our customers.

As I reflect on the past year, I keep coming back to a simple idea: progress in this industry has never been the result of any one company, one leader, or one moment. It has always come from the collective effort of people who believe in what this business represents and who are willing to invest in its future.

That is what it means to be a Proud APRO Member.

And when we move forward together – with a shared understanding of our history and a commitment to professionalism – we become the rising tide that continues to lift this industry, and everyone in it, higher.

Thank you for being part of this work.
