Rent-A-Center’s Associate General Counsel of International Legal Affairs, Norma L. Garcia, recently won the Corporate Counsel Diversity Award from the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association (DHBA). The award recognizes those who demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal field. “It is an honor to be recognized by DHBA with this award,” says Garcia. “Diversity and women’s initiatives are important to me because of my experience of not having a female mentor and role model in the legal field to help me as I navigated my way through law school. I want to make sure that those who aspire to obtain a law degree have a network of support and guidance available to them.” Garcia serves as the co-chair of the Dallas Latina Leadership Program, a program geared toward engaging and developing Latina lawyers and law students. She is also a Commissioner on the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Latina Commission, whose mission is to advocate for Latina lawyers and law students and create programs that promote their advancement within the legal profession. Garcia is one of the four founding members of Rent-A-Center’s first Women’s Leadership Conference based on a program founded by women for women that began with mentoring circles within the company. As Associate General Counsel, Garcia oversees the legal aspects for the company in Mexico and Puerto Rico as well as consumer litigation in the United States. She began her legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Collin County after graduating from Oklahoma City University School of Law. Garcia earned her bachelor of arts in communications along with a teaching certificate in elementary and bilingual education from the University of Texas – Pan American. Garcia was presented the honor on October 28 during DHBA’s Noche de Luz annual event.
