Briley is new APRO President

July 22nd, 2010
New APRO President Robert Briley.

The Association of Progressive Rental Organizations Board of Directors Thursday, elected Robert Briley as the association’s new president.

Briley, who currently serves as first vice president, succeeds outgoing president "Tiger" John Cleek who was elected APRO’s president the past two years.

In the board meeting, members also elected Cynthia Strunk first vice president, David David second vice president, Richard Rose secretary and Chris Bolin treasurer.

Briley, who owns seven Aaron’s Sales and Lease stores in West Texas was elected to the APRO board of directors in 2001. Briley earned APRO’s Rental Dealer of the Year Award in 2005 and was awarded the APRO Legislative Conference American flag for holding the highest number of congressional meetings during APRO’s 2000 Legislative Conference.

Briley said his first order of business as APRO’s president is to listen to the membership. Briley said the continued viability of the national trade association depends on its ability to meet the needs of a diverse array of businesses.

"APRO represents a very diverse group of people all with different views about the direction of the industry," Briley said. "I am confident because I have a great staff at APRO, a membership that represents the spirit and heart of this industry and an outstanding board of directors to work with. These give me peace because they are people I can count on. A group can create a greater plan than a single person. A shared vision is the only vision.

Within hours of his election, Briley has already met with TRIB Executive Director Dennis Shields and RentDirect Nationwide Executive Director James McAlpine — representatives of the nation’s two rent to own buying groups — and other industry leaders to open a line of communication he said is essential to the growth prosperity and safety of the industry.

"Goal setting, I believe, is a bottom up, not a top down exercise," he said.

Kevin Quinn, owner of Tacoma-based Quality Rentals Wednesday, was named APRO’s 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner at the association’s annual awards banquet at the Marriot Hotel in downtown Louisville.

The awards banquet was the final social event of the APRO 2010 Convention and Trade Show.

Known as "The General", due to his fearless leadership as APRO’s President during one of the most tumultuous times in RTO’s history, Quinn earned his stripes facing down a dual pronged attack on the rent-to-own industry from Congress and the IRS in the mid-1990’s.

"Investigative hearings by Henry B. Gonzalez, the IRS trying to re-characterize our transaction as a sale and bad press, this president dealt with it from all sides," said outgoing APRO President "Tiger" John Cleek. "He stepped up to the plate and has been an adviser and confidant to every APRO leader since then."

Quinn is the only person to be elected president of the APRO board in his first year on the board of directors.

"You are all my family," Quinn said, "and you just don’t know how much this means to me today."

APRO’s 2010 Rental Dealer of the Year, Jamie Slatton (Left) with mother Lois Slatton.

The Association of Progressive Rental Organization’s annual awards banquet Wednesday, honored rental dealers, vendors and state associations that have gone above and beyond the call of duty for the rent-to-own industry and exude dedication to causes greater than themselves or their personal businesses.

APRO President "Tiger John Cleek" named Jamie Slatton, owner of Buddy’s Home Furnishings APRO’s 2010 Rental Dealer of the Year for his passion for the industry, his many years of service on the APRO Board of Directors and his enthusiastic fundraising efforts for scholarship funds.

Slatton accepted the award with his mother, Lois, by his side.

"On behalf of everybody at Buddy’s Home Furnishings we want to thank you for this award," Jamie said.

Slatton comes from a long line of “Doers”, Cleek said, for rent-to-own and APRO. His father, "Slats", an industry icon and the recipient of APRO’s Lifetime Achievement Award and his sister, Kim, both preceded Jamie on the APRO board of directors. His first cousin, also and industry innovator and major APRO supporter and past recipient of both APRO’s Presidents Award of Excellence and Lifetime Achievement Award, also served on the APRO board.

"He is one of the most likeable men any of us have ever met," Cleek said.

Bryan Collins of Bryce Company was honored as APRO’s 2010 Vendor of the year.

Collins became a manager trainee for Gordon’s Jewelers when he graduated from college and discovered the rent-to-own industry when he went to work for Southern Rings in 1995. He developed a passion for our industry while at Southern Rings and decided to go off on his own in 2001.

One of the first business decisions our 2010 Vendor of the Year made when he founded his company was to join APRO as an associate member. Today, he gives his time and talents on APRO’s Vendor Advisory Committee.

"He’s been loyal to rent-to-own and APRO," Cleek said. "He always treats those around him with courtesy – and now it’s our time to honor him."

The Missouri Rental Dealers Association earned APRO’s 2010 State Association of the Year Award and Charles Smithgall, Aaron’s largest franchisee, was named APRO’s 2010 Heritage Award Winner.

Richard May, APRO’s Public Affairs Director, earned the association’s 2010 President’s Award. APRO Legal Counsel Ed Winn III was honored for his 30 years of service to APRO and to the industry.

Burton comes from a background in national intelligence and security and had no previous experience in rent-to-own when he opened the doors to his store more than two decades ago. He credits thriving in this industry to the openness and willingness to share that he’s found in fellow rental dealers.
It was such openness that instilled in Burton the aspiration to give back to the rent-to-own community. When the call went out for someone to spearhead the revitalization of the Michigan Rental Dealers Association, he picked up the mantle. Several years ago, he developed an educational seminar, “Why 94 Percent of Your Customers Don’t Rent,” which he has presented at industry functions across the country. Along with running his business and occasionally doing RTO consulting work, Burton currently serves on the APRO board, is chairman of the bylaw revision committee and former chairman of the public relations committee.

David has served as president of the Indiana and Midwest Rental Dealers Association for 12 years. In 1991, he received the APRO State Association of the Year award, was named Rental Dealer of the Year in 2000 and, in 2009, was recipient of the APRO President’s Award of Excellence.

Dumler began his law career at Morrison & Hecker LLP in Wichita in August 1993, where he practiced product liability defense, employment practice defense, general commercial litigation and property tax. Before entering the legal profession, he spent six years with the Wichita Police Department as a patrol officer and detective.

He worked directly with Alrenco owner Mike Walts, COO Bud Holladay and CFO Ted Wilson as Alrenco’s vice president of operations from 1989 to 1998. APRO co-founder and former APRO President Holladay, longtime APRO member Walts and 1989–90 APRO President Wilson instilled in Kelly a great passion for the industry and the spirit for participating in the association.
Kelly was a longtime member of the Indiana Rental-Purchase Dealers Association and was its president from 1996 to 1997.

He worked with former APRO board member Ron DeMoss for passage of a business-friendly West Virginia state law and has been a member of, and speaker for, the Texas Association of Rental Agencies. Rose’s career in the home furnishings business spans more than 40 years, the past 26 in the rent-to-own industry as co-founder/co-owner of RTO Inc. An avid golfer, reader and amateur financial market analyst, he is a graduate of the University of Richmond located in Virginia’s capital city. An economics major, he also is a graduate of the American Institute of Banking, an industry in which he began his career before returning to his retail roots.
Early on, Rose went to work in a “buy-here/pay-here” furniture store, handling all of the sales, deliveries and collections in much the same way as rent-to-own operates today. Eventually, Rose, along with some partners, created their own furniture business, successfully owned and operated for more than 15 years. With a different partnership, he established RTO Inc. The company currently operates 19 BestWay Rent To Own stores, RTO Tax System (a RAL/fast-tax-prep business), BestWay Autos and, soon, three RNR Custom Wheels & Performance Tires stores.
A member of APRO since 1984, Rose has served as a director on a variety of boards and has been the president and CEO of every company he has operated. He has a very strong command of the financial side of the business for an “operations guy.”

James Slatton

Buddy’s Home Furnishings, Tampa, Florida
James Slatton’s rent-to-own career began more than 30 years ago when his father, Norman “Slats” Slatton Sr., started taking him to work at their family’s retail and RTO stores. Slats mentored Jamie into becoming the driving factor in Buddy’s Home Furnishing’s growth throughout Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. He has seen Buddy’s expand from a five-store retail chain into 72 rent-to-own locations.
Slatton has held many positions at Buddy’s, including manager, division manager, director of marketing and vice president. He has been a TRIB Group member for more than 20 years. He is an active participant in APRO’s annual Dave Egan Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., and the Florida Rental Dealers Association Legislative Conference in Tallahassee.
As Buddy’s vice president, Slatton has helped build it into one of the industry’s largest privately owned rent-to-own companies. His enthusiasm for the industry is matched by his leadership and success. He has earned the reputation among his peers as one who brings excitement to rent-to-own for his company and for the entire industry.

Mike Tissot
Countryside Rentals, dba Rent-2-Own, Bainbridge, Ohio
Since his return to the rent-to-own industry in 1997, Mike Tissot has poured his heart and soul into his business, staff, friends and family. In 13 short years, he has leveraged his marketing background and passion for doing things the right way into a very successful and growing 26-store chain in Ohio and Kentucky, Countryside Rentals, dba Rent-2-Own.

Tissot credits most of his company’s success with the decision-making talents of hard-working operations teams in each of his stores and the support that they are given from a dedicated home-office staff. Tissot knows the value of a customer and that appreciation is instilled into all of the company’s 200-plus employees.
As a consummate learner and avid reader of business and management books, Tissot shares his knowledge with rental dealers across the country. “All rental dealers have great ideas,” Tissot says. “I love to share my ideas and steal theirs!” At APRO gatherings over the past several years, he has entertained and educated with seminars focusing on everything from rent-to-own marketing and promotions to a spoof on RTO business entitled “How Not to be Profitable.” Tissot’s ongoing seminars are some of the best-attended and highest-rated by attendees year after year.

The Association of Progressive Rental Organizations (APRO) today honored Cordillia Stewart, a junior at Drury University. where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and Criminology, with a specially produced video in commemoration of her winning a $3,000 scholarship from APRO’s Scholarship Foundation.

Watch video.

Stewart, an assistant manager for National TV Sales and Rentals’ Mountain Grove store, is one of four scholarship winners the year — the first time multiple scholarship winners have been named. The opportunity was made possible after the non-profit APRO Scholarship Foundation reached its initial fundraising goal of $100,000.

The following are the winners of APRO’s 2010 Educational Scholarships.

Cordilia Stewart, National T.V. Sales and Rentals Assistant Manager
Drury University
APRO Member Sponsor – National TV Sales and Rentals
$3,000

Cordilia Stewart calls her educational pursuits a “Long Journey”.

She was an excellent High School student with a bright future. Then, as Stewart puts it, “everything went wrong”.

She dropped out of High School pregnant with her son as a single mother working at fast food restaurants to just get by. She became pregnant again and realized her once bright future through college was now destined for “dead end” jobs as a high school drop out which could serve only as an example to to her children of what "not" to do.

She and her family were living on her brother’s couch without a job. She applied at National TV and Sales but they were hesitant to hire her as her small stature would be challenged by the physical duties of an account manager. After she “bugged, nagged and annoyed the manager “ to give her a chance, Stewart is now assistant manager of National TV’s Mountain Grove store, working there two years. She even won “Assistant Manager of the Year” last year.

Her pursuit of a degree never left her mind when she achieved her G.E.D. then enrolled at Drury University. She is now 104 credit hours on her way to a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and Criminology. All while working full time at National TV Sales and Rentals and sustaining a 3.5 grade point average.

“The road has been very long and full of sacrifice. Working long hours, being a single mother, away from my children, studying on my lunch breaks, writing papers at two in the morning and forgetting what sleep used to feel like. The trip has been worth every mile though and it’s not over until I have that degree,” she said.

Stewart plans to teach G.E.D classes when she graduates to repay her gratitude to those who helped her when she needed it most.

Kylie Pelow

Ohio University – Honors Tutorial College
APRO Member Sponsor – Aaron’s Franchise (SEI /Aarons)
Aaron’s Employee Sponsor – Chris Pelow, General Manager

Pelow was a member of the High School Varsity Soccer Team and was captain for her senior year. She volunteered and excelled in her studies while working part time at a local restaurant. Her father Chris is the general manager for SEI Aaron’s franchise store in Geneva, NY.

Since then he has completed 89 hours and been on the Dean’s list with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5.

Kessler will graduate cum laude with a degree in Business Management in August. He then will be a first year graduate student in the fall working on an MBA in finance and marketing. Kessler has been married seven years and has two children. When Kessler is not being a father, store manager and full time student he also serves on the board for the 11th St Church of God in Canton as treasurer. This is the second time Kessler has applied for APRO’s Educational Scholarship.

“This scholarship is a fantastic opportunity for me and my wife. It’s tough to work full time while going to school full time so this scholarship is a great help. I just want to thank APRO and Rent-A-Center for this opportunity,” remarked Kessler.

Applicants must be employees or their children who work for APRO member companies. The recipients are judged on their financial need, their work in the communities, length of time as an employee and academic excellence.

This year’s scholarship winners were also treated to another surprise with an anonymous donor contributing additional funds for this year’s winners. The winner received a $3,000 scholarship. The runner up received a $2,000 scholarship and the two finalists received $1,500 scholarships. Each receive half of their scholarship immediately and the other half when they show proof of a 3.0 or better grade point average for the semester.
