RTO Bill reaches 100 House co-sponsors

H.R. 1588 reaches 100 co-sponsors

Congratulations to all APRO members for generating 100 co-sponsors for the industry supported bill that federally recognizes the rent-to-own transaction as a lease.

Please contact your U.S. House of Representative and U.S. Senators and request their co-sponsorship of the Consumer Rental Purchase Agreement Act (H.R. 1588/S.881) if they have not yet done so.

A hearing was held on the House bill July 26. It was voted out of the subcommittee on November 17. The legislation is now pending a vote in the full committee.

Less than 5% of congressional legislation receives official action so the fact that the House version had a hearing and vote is significant. Please continue this momentum and contact your members of Congress. We need Senators to co-sponsor to help build support on the Senate side.

The U.S. Senate companion currently has five co-sponsors.

There have been several negative state bills introduced already this year. Passing a federal bill protects your business federally and at the state level.

Please contact your members of Congress now asking for co-sponsorship for H.R. 1588/S. 881. If you need any assistance, please contact APRO Government Relations Director Richard May at RMay@RTOHQ.org.

Also, please register for APRO’s Legislative Conference where you can make the most impact with your members of Congress by meeting their offices personally. Register now for the April 17-19 APRO Legislative Conference by e-mailing Jeannie Hutchison at JHutchison@RTOHQ.org or by calling 1/800-204-2776 ext. 108.

H.R. 1588 voted out of subcommittee

The U.S. House Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee passed the APRO-supported bill H.R. 1588.

The bill will now move on to the full Financial Services Committee. That committee will determine when a hearing and/or mark-up will take place. After consideration by the full committee the bill proceeds to the U.S. House of Representative for a floor vote.

"I want to thank all APRO members for their hard work and support," said APRO Executive Director Bill Keese. "It’s a team effort and we need to keep pushing the ball forward until we get this legislation passed."

APRO members are encouraged to continue to generate co-sponsors for H.R. 1588 and the Senate companion bill S. 881.
