Voting begins in Paul Davis' council race

Riverside City Council Candidate Paul Davis of Nations Rent-To-Own. Listen to podcast.

Rent-to-own veteran Paul Davis' bid for a seat on the Riverside, California City Council began in ernest Monday as voters began receiving ballots for the mail-only election that will determine three council races.

Davis, owner of two Nation's Rent-To-Own stores -- one in Riverside and the other in Moreno Valley  -- is in a particularly fierce battle with incumbent Frank Schiavone, who is seeking a third term. Schiavone, 56, last week lost a court challenge in which he sought to prohibit Davis' ability to call himself a former sheriff's deputy and police officer in campaign ads, saying it would mislead voters.

Davis, 41, served just under two years as a Riverside County Sheriff Deputy and around six months as a Riverside Police Officer and last Thursday, a Riverside County Judge sided with him in the case, noting no state law prohibited Davis from using the information.

However, it appears the fireworks between the two candidates have only just begun.
