"Slats" Golf Memorial opens FRDA annual meeting

Paul McKean, FRDA President Chris Kale, Paul Schaller, Ernie Alonso, Larry Pividal and Jeff O'Conner, all of Rent King, were a few of the 66 golfers who turned out for the "Slats" Golf Memorial Monday -- the opening event of FRDA's annual meeting in Tampa, Florida.

Around 66 rent-to-own professionals turned out Monday, for the sixth annual Norman "Slats" Slatton Golf Memorial -- the kickoff event for the Florida Rental Dealers Association's annual meeting at the Crown Plaza at Sabal Park in Tampa, Florida.

Some 115 dealers representing 18 companies are expected at the annual meeting, which also drew around 48 registered vendors, many of whom joined the golf outing and the first annual FRDA Texas Hold E'm Poker Tournament Monday night

Proceeds from the poker tournament go toward the FRDA PAC Fund.

Vendors will take part in a table top show prior to the official opening of FRDA's annual business meeting Tuesday, which features updates from APRO Executive Director Bill Keese and APRO Legal Counsel Ed Winn III.

Chris Korst, Rent-A-Center executive vice president of operations, is the meeting's keynote speaker.

FRDA Board Member Mike Rutledge said the well-attended annual meeting was another example of the unity of the association and the premium it places on communication as a means of fending off negative legislation.

"This is one of the most aggressive associations in the country," said Rutledge who owns two ColorTyme stores in Ocala and Leesburg Florida. "The most important thing we have to offer is communication. Without it, this association would be dead. The reason we haven't had negative bills come along is because we communicate and share information on a regular basis so there aren't any surprises."

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
