Retail study shows new opportunities for digital advertising

A new report shows that 92 percent of consumers rely on the Internet when shopping for products. A recent report by Jones Lang LaSalle "Get Connected -- How to Harness the Power of Digital Media" reports that digital connections must be integrated as a whole to maximize consumer penetration through avenues such as e-mail, social media sites and a company's website.

The report states that advertising and promotion are no longer one-way but interactive. Consumers have the ability to share feedback, post reviews and content directly through the computer in a way not seen in past retail environments. Word of mouth advertising through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs and e-mail are putting the consumer in the driver's seat creating a new dynamic for retailers.

"While this is a new concept, it also creates a huge opportunity for marketers,” said Beth Faulkner, VP marketing, Jones Lang LaSalle Retail. “Social media allows buzz and viral growth so if we reach our audience with the right messages, product information and offers, we can drive traffic to our malls and stores but also have a two-way conversation with our shoppers. Through this we can discover what they want, listen to their feedback and then improve our products and services.”
