Rent-to-own News - Rental industry visits Congressmembers, raises $25,000 for education
Around 125 members of the rent to own industry -- dealers, vendors and family members -- took to Capitol Hill Wednesday for hundreds of meetings with Congress-members as part of APRO's 2011 Legislative Conference.
Dealers took the opportunity to thank past supporters of now reintroduced rent to own legislation -- The Consumer Rental Purchase Agreement Act -- to meet new Congress-members and put a face on the rent to own transaction and its value in the U.S. economy and to the American consumer.
After a full day of meetings, conference attendees also took part in a special dinner banquet held at the Folger Shakespeare Library -- a mere block from the U.S. Capitol
At the banquet, RTO industry cheerleaders Larry Carrico, owner of Rent One, and Jamie Slatton, owner of Buddy's Home Furnishings, raised more than $25,000 for the APRO Educational Scholarship Foundation. The fund balance now stands at $160,000, including the funds raised, and will award five scholarships worth $11,000.
"We have to remember to take care of our own," Carrico said. "And this scholarship fund is a great way to show this industry's commitment to eduction and that we are a family industry that cares about our employees and their children."
The APRO scholarship is available to employees of APRO member companies and their children.

A New Rent-to-Own Experience by Neil Ferguson Here’s the lowdown on APRO’s 2012 Convention and Trade Show, July 24-26 in Memphis. The RTO industry’s big event will offer many valuable experiences, including insights on how to turn your stores into “experiences”–the good kind for consumers
Who Is Your Competition? by Bill Keese In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.
A Review of Online Customer Complaints by Ed Winn III While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
