Rent-to-own News - Rent One manager stands by customer in difficult time

April 15, 2011

As manager of the Rent One store in the small town of Caruthersville, Missouri, Derek Glass knows his customer base on more than a business level.

Though he lives a stone's throw away in Bragg City -- he spent many years after college working on his family's farm -- he decided to give rent to own a try and helped re-open the store he now manages.

"I know what folks around here deal with on a daily basis," he said. "It's either factories or farming. So I can relate to everyone who comes in my store on some level."

Glass reached a decision point recently when he learned long-time customer Whittney Cannon had delivered prematurely as a result of her heart condition and the baby, born April 8, weighed in at 1.3 pounds.

"Anytime anything happens, especially when it touches someone this close, and you actually get to see the benefit in their lives, I generally try to get involved," Glass said. "People around here remember those moments. They never forget that."

Glass promptly got clearance from Rent One owner Larry Carrico to participate in an upcoming fundraiser for Cannon May 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Caruthersville. Rent One is donating a new laptop and executive box suite at Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois. Both will be raffled at the fundraiser.

Proceeds will go initially to finance Cannon's transportation costs to and from Medical Trauma Center in Memphis where her baby, Kinsley, is recovering. The baby is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another three months and hospitalization and home care needs will continue to mount.

Glass will also be cooking food that will be sold at the fundraiser.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
