Rent-to-own News - PrimeTime! kicks off new RTO opportunities in Maryland

August 16, 2010

PrimeTime! by Nationwide Marketing Group (NMG) kicked off it's fall conference and buying show Sunday at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

The event runs August 15 – August 18.

Some  2,800 manufacturers and independent retail and rent to own dealers from across the country representing over 800 companies are expected to attend the event.

RentDirect Nationwide, the group’s rent-to-own division, offers an important channel of distribution with a series of unique benefits and competitive advantages that were traditionally unavailable to RTO dealers. For more information on RentDirect Nationwide, go here.

Noting that most retailers are still experiencing twice the number of credit turndowns when compared to just 18 months ago, RentDirect Executive Director James MacAlpine, notes the conference is a great opportunity for retailers and rent to own dealers to forge mutually beneficial partnerships that can turn those turndowns into sales through the rent to own transaction.

"With over 350 RentDirect members, Nationwide is certain to have a rental dealer in your area to investigate such partnerships," MacAlpine said in a conference publication. "This new partnership would not only increase sales but also help increase foot traffic. Retailers would now be able to advertise 'finance options for everyone', or 'ask about our lease-purchase payment option.' Also, rental dealers would be able to send customers to their retail partner to view products not available on the rental dealer’s floor."

Again, products can be purchased by the rental dealer, from their retail partner and then leased back to the customer, MacAlpine explains.

He notes two other program opportunities available to Nationwide members for converting turndowns to sales through the Rent-A-Center (RAC) Acceptance and Whynotleaseit programs.

RAC’s Acceptance program is available to retailers who have a minimum of 50 turndowns per month (read more).

The Whynotleaseit program does not have a turndown minimum and is currently available in all but three states. This program was originally designed for smaller dealers that sold appliances and electronics but now includes furniture, MacAlpine notes.

NMG’s extensive training will include two days of PrimeTime! University courses specifically tailored for independent dealers. According to the organization, these courses are taught by industry leaders who share their expertise on how to build a better business. Topics being offered include management, sales, marketing and web development. The NMG leadership team will also present on the latest industry trends in merchandising and marketing initiatives. ??According to NMG, the information presented at these meetings are vital for independent dealers to understand the regulatory issues and trends in the industry in order to effectively compete against larger retail chains.

Other presenters who will be sharing their expertise include Monster Cable Products founder Noel Lee, Sam Allman CEO of Allman Consulting and Training, Bob Negen founder of Mackinaw Kite, Paul Mac Donald owner of Factory Appliance Service and Chris Chinnock President of Insight Media.

Clarkson went on to explain, “the endless resources available to you through Nationwide Marketing Group will create a business environment that is difficult to fail in.”

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
