NEW PODCAST: Mark Anderson, president New England Rental Dealers Association

Mark Anderson, president of the New England Rental Dealers Association. Listen to podcast.

Mark Anderson owner of FastTrack Rent To Own in New Britain, Connecticut, is the new president of a new rental dealers association in the northeast representing Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Anderson began his rent to own career in 1988 with Rent-A-Center where he worked for 10 years. After that he worked for many years for ColorTyme corporate and then for a large ColorTyme franchisee.

His path as an independent dealer began in 2003 with the opening of his Premier Rental Purchase franchise. After his license agreement expired this July, Anderson stepped out on his own with FastTrack Rent To Own.

"We have a significant amount of work to do to pass rent to own legislation on a federal level but we have some issues at the state level as well, particularly in Massachusetts," Anderson said.

In this exclusive APRO podcast, Anderson describes his goals for the new association and the importance of a grassroots campaign to carry the rent-to-own story successfully and consistently from the statehouse to Capitol Hill.

Connecticut and Massachusetts are particularly strategic states, as they are home to Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee, and Rep. Barney Frank, who represents Massachusetts 4th Congressional District and chairs the House Financial Services Committee.

"We can work together to put a face on the rent-to-own legislation we're talking about," Anderson said. "Going to Congress...and showing them this isn't just a business for me, I mean yes, I do make a living this way but I've got everything in it...I love our customers and I think they deserve our transaction and it needs to be recognized."

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
