New England RTO dealers step up for industry

New England Rental Dealers Association President Mark Anderson and secretary/treasurer Mark Key.

Around a dozen rent-to-own dealers from three states braved drizzling Connecticut rain Thursday, to create a tri-state dealers association that will focus on communication and protecting and furthering industry interests at both the state and federal level.

APRO State Association Coordinating Committee Chairman Dave Edwards led participants in a lively roundtable style meeting that included first establishing the New England Rental Dealers Association (NERDA) and then electing officers at the organization's flagship meeting at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Edwards, who is also president of the nation's largest Aaron's franchise, said the value of a state association is the opportunity it gives dealers to head off industry threats through proactive, collective efforts toward bettering the image of rent-to-own. Recent protests at New York Rent-A-Center locations and court challenges to the Massachusetts' rent-to-own statute (see story) spell out the need for continued vigilance by the industry and its dealers.

"We still have battles to fight although we've had some success over the last couple of years," Edwards said. "We're trying to put a public face on rent-to-own. Unfortunately, a lot of the time we are still perceived as illegitimate. The value of a state association is to make sure our dealers stay together as a cohesive unit with a cohesive message."

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
