Rent-to-own News - Iowa dealers hold 23rd annual meeting

September 10, 2010

Attendees at the Iowa rental dealers meeting Thursday.

Around 20 people turned out for the annual meeting of the Association of Iowa Rental Dealers Thursday at the  Hilton Garden Inn in Johnston, Iowa.

The turnout represented some 9 Iowa rent to own companies turned out for the meeting where current president Brian Luksetich of Super Rent Corp was re-elected to another term along with vice president Mark Connelley who manages an Aaron's franchise.

Attendees heard a state legislative update from lobbyist James Carney on the state climate for rent to own in Iowa and the general legislative process and the importance of grass roots organization. APRO board member Chris Bolin of Bolin's Rental Purchase turned the conversation back to the basics with a discussion of day to rent to own store level operations.

The group then met in an open forum discussion.

"I had given this meeting the theme of 'in uncertain times, it pays to be educated and up to speed on the issues," said Luksetich, who was first elected AIRD's president 2007. "And that was one of the goals of this association early on was to provide a forum for educating members about the issues and have a pool of resources to deal with issues as they came up. I'm proud of the gains this association has made."

DSI Systems sponsored the meeting. DSI Systems is the nation’s largest distributor of satellite and consumer electronic equipment. Their business began in 1984 with one location in Des Moines, Iowa. Twenty four years later, there are 31 locations covering the country from coast to coast.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
