Industry furthers training program with computer, cash donation

Casey Pristou with training program executive director Lowry Taylor.

Casey Pristou, President of Aaron's Franchisee Watershed Development Corporation, recently met with Lowry Taylor, executive director of the Chicago-based Danny K. Davis Job Training Program (DKDJTP), to donate a van load of used desktop and laptop computers, LCD TV’s and other miscellaneous technology items.

The equipment will be used to train ex-offenders to repair and build computers through the DKDJTP. Read more.

“The DKDJTP creates job opportunities for those who want to turn their lives around," Pristou said. "It is a good program that is doing a great job in a tough environment. We just want to help."

Now in its third year, the DKDJTP is part of the non-profit Digital Development Corporation which consists of grass-root community organizations, businesses, educators, technology professionals and individuals who work to close the digital divide by addressing four key areas: access, education, diversity and careers.

More than half of the students in the classes are ex-offenders and the training program is aimed at lowering repeat offenses by teaching students skills that can lead to gainful employment.

In addition to the computers, Pristou presented the organization with a check for $1,000 on behalf of Watershed to assist in funding the program. This meeting builds on the strong relationship between DKDJTP, The Association of Progressive Rental Organizations and the Illinois Rental Dealers Association.

"The support that we receive from IRDA and APRO is the type of support that help us stay on top of technology, as we train techs and turn people lives around," said  DKDJTP Executive Director Lowry Taylor. "Without this type of support, from the business sector, we would not be able to do the work that we do. Everyone should know that these two high class organizations make it possible to train ex-offenders and people that have no job skills and they learn with top notch equipment. Thanks to IRDA, APRO and a great man, in Casey Pristou, of Aaron's, in McHenry, Illinois."

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
