Rent-to-own News - High Touch pitches in for Habitat for Humanity

July 15, 2009

A single, working mom wants a safer place to live and separate bedrooms for her two young children. High Touch wants to make a difference for the Lee family and other families in need. Both are getting their wish, thanks to a July 25 Habitat for Humanity workday and sponsorship.

Construction will take place on the Lee home July 8-Aug. 8 in the neighborhood development located one block east of North Arkansas and 33rd Street. A team of 20 High Touch employees and their families will volunteer their time to participate in the building on Saturday, July 25. In addition, High Touch, Inc., a technology solutions provider, will provide dollars to help cover construction costs including all the building materials and subcontractors who do the concrete, plumbing, electrical and HVAC. The Lee family hopes to move in to their new home in mid-August.

Giving money for materials and labor was only part of the equation, says David Glover, High Touch vice president and Habitat for Humanity family services volunteer. An opportunity to help the Lee family is the real motivation.

“Food and shelter are two of life’s basic needs,” Glover said. “Working with Habitat gives us the opportunity to help with the shelter part. Knowing we’re helping a single parent with a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old makes it even more rewarding.”

The project is part of Habitat for Humanity’s Community Challenge which recruits corporations to underwrite direct construction costs and participate in team-building activities. Linda Stewart, Habitat for Humanity executive director, expressed her appreciation.

“High Touch generously partners with Wichita Habitat for Humanity to offer their hands in service to support our information technology needs," Stewart said. "It is now a particular privilege to have High Touch join us to use their hands to build a home through the Community Challenge project.”

High Touch, Inc. is an employee-owned company that provides technology solutions to small and mid-size businesses. by Neil Ferguson

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
