Florida association cancels annual legislative conference

FRDA President Chris Kale

A lack of pressing issues led the Florida Rental Dealers Association (FRDA) to cancel its annual legislative conference.

FRDA President Chris Kale Wednesday confirmed cancellation of the event which was slated for March 12 and 13 in Tallahassee. In lieu of a conference, Kale said a handful of dealers will likely make the trip to Tallahassee in late March to "meet and greet" new legislators.

"They say the times kind of make the organization and that's been true for us in the past," Kale said. "Right now we just don't have any pressing needs or issues. We have a great business climate in Florida right now and clearly the efforts of previous legislative trips have paid off."

Not that FRDA is resting on its laurels. Kale, who owns 20 Rent King stores in Florida, said his association monitors activity at the state capital on a daily basis with the help of a full-time lobbyist.

As a three-time APRO state association of the year award winner, FRDA's legislative efforts have been recognized by the industry, most recently for passage in 2006 of an amendment to a Florida statute that addresses theft of rent-to-own merchandise.

FRDA represents over 500 rental-purchase stores in the state which employ some 3,900 and generate over $257 million in annual revenues.

A date for the association's annual membership meeting has yet to be determined.
