Rent-to-own News - Davis wins Riverside City Council Seat

June 3, 2009

Riverside Ward 4 City Councilman Paul Davis. Listen to podcast.

Rent-to-own dealer Paul Davis is the new Riverside Ward 4 City Councilman after winning a decisive victory over the two-term incumbent last night.

Davis took home 52 percent of the vote in the race against Frank Schiavone in a hard fought election in which voters also returned incumbents Nancy Hart and Andy Melendrez to the dais.

Though the nine month campaign, marked by ward walking and door-to-door visits with thousands of voters, has left Davis 14 pounds lighter and in need of new pair of shoes, he said his victory was a resounding vote for true representation on the council.

"The voters recognized we need change," said an exhausted Davis from his home this morning. "The constituents want someone who will represent the whole and not just special interests."

Davis learned of the final tally at around 9:30 p.m. at his home where friends and supporters had gathered to watch the election returns on the registrar's Web site.

Davis said Schiavone called to congratulate him after the outcome was made clear.

Around 23 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the election.

As the owner of Nation's Rent To Own, Davis said he connected with many fellow small business owners in his ward, many of whom are concerned over Riverside's depleted reserve funds and shrinking sales tax revenue.

He owns two rent-to-own stores, one in Riverside and the other in Moreno Valley.

Davis said his first order of business is to get a handle on the city's budget while keeping voters in the loop "one step at a time".

Davis now joins current Abilene City Council Member (and APRO Board Member) Robert Briley as the second rent-to-own dealer elected to a city council. The late rent-to-own pioneer Ernie Talley served two terms as a Kansas State Representative.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
