Aaron's, Rent-A-Center release Q1 Reports

The nation's two largest rent-to-own companies, Aaron's and Rent-A-Center, released their respective first quarter 2011 earnings reports late Monday.

Aaron's summary:

Aaron's today announced record revenues and earnings for the three months ended March 31, 2011.

For the first quarter of 2011, revenues increased 8% to $532.7 million compared to $495.3 million for the first quarter in 2010. Net earnings increased 20% to $44.4 million versus $37.0 million last year. Diluted earnings per share were $.55 compared to $.45 per share a year ago, a 22% increase.

Rent-A-Center summary:

Total revenues for the quarter ended March 31, 2011, were $742.2 million, an increase of $23.8 million from total revenues of $718.4 million for the same period in the prior year.

This 3.3% increase in total revenues was primarily due to an increase in revenue driven by the RAC Acceptance business, in particular the acquisition of The Rental Store completed in the fourth quarter of 2010, offset by a reduction in revenue due to the discontinuation of the financial services business. Same store sales for the quarter ended March 31, 2011 were 0.1%.
