Rent-to-own News - New York Dealers approve incentives for national participation

November 2, 2011

The New York Rental Dealers Association (NYSRDA) at its annual meeting last month approved a measure to increase dealer participation in the industry at the national level by approving a $1,000 lodging and travel reimbursement per event for each of its members who attend APRO's 2012 Legislative Conference and National Convention.

"We have so many federal legislators from the state of New York, we really need as many dealers as possible to cover all the bases," said NYSRDA President and APRO Board Member Dave Edwards. "As far as the idea to reimburse participants at the APRO Convention, that was encouraged by visiting dealer and Pennsylvania RDA President Sandi Frye who told us, after having gone this year, that she said she would go to that over any of the buying shows. It is a great opportunity for our members to take advantage of that tremendous networking opportunity."

Edwards was re-elected NYSRDA president, Tom Bodowski was elected vice president and Greg Heck was elected treasurer. Rick Vadnais, Bill Monnat and Dave Phillips remain board members.

Dealers also heard from state lobbyist Tim Sheridan regarding approximately 25 bed bug bills introduced int he state legislature.

Rita Haney from Protect-A-Bed presented dealers with timely information on bed bugs and their resurgence since 1996. Protect-A-Bed's zip lock mattress encasements are guaranteed to lock bugs in or keep them out.

The last word on the bed bug topic went to inventor Mike Frye who has developed a portable electric bed bug extermination device called the Bug Out Thermal Extermination System capable of superheating rental delivery trucks in order to kill infested merchandise.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
