Rent-to-own News - Texas dealers review marketing plan, open buying show
The Texas Association of Rental Dealers Monday, continued their professional development with an information packed sessions that began with a review of the rental industry's first ever RTO Marketing Plan led by marketing expert Jill McDonough. McDonough reviewed the plan derived through information culled through four potential customer focus groups held throughout the country earlier this spring by APRO in conjunction with participating state associations. One of the studies was conducted with TARA in San Antonio. McDonough encouraged dealers to review their marketing materials with an eye less toward price promotion and more toward a service proposition that includes all the benefits rent to own offers including free delivery, excellent customer service and the fact merchandise can be returned at any time with no penalty. Leo Perryman, store manager of Affordable Rent to Own in Beaumont, who attended TARA 2011 primarily for the marketing information, said he was ready to use the data to re-write his marketing strategy. "When you see something like this you realize direct-to-consumer marketing has evolved and continues to evolve and we need to make the most of that information," Perryman said. "Marketing has to appeal to people on an emotional level where they live. That more and more is on the Internet. We we will be taking a serious look at that to push our business into the 21st century." Steve Moore of Jackson Walker, LLC and Dan Butcher of Strausburger and Price, LLP led a presentation on Texas gross margins tax proposal that could adversely affect Texas RTO's. APRO Legal Counsel Ed Winn III followed with a discussion of pressing RTO legal issues. The Southwest Buying Show opened at 11:30 a.m. and allowed dozens of participating exhibitors face-to-face contact with Texas Rental Dealers.
Nationwide Southwest and RentDirect Nationwide sponsored TARA's 2011 Annual Convention.

Who Is Your Competition? by Bill Keese In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.
A Review of Online Customer Complaints by Ed Winn III While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
