Rent-to-own News - Oklahoma dealers elect officers, hear industry, vendor updates

October 3, 2011

Oklahoma RDA President Chuck Haver (r) with secretary/treasurer Craig Stanley.

The Oklahoma Rental Dealers Association held its annual meeting September 27th and 28th at the Renaissance Hotel in Tulsa Oklahoma.

The event kicked off Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. with a cocktail reception hosted by Nationwide Southwest. The reception gave member dealers and vendors an opportunity to discuss business and to get to know one another a little better.

The morning of the 28th breakfast was provided by Nationwide Southwest and the meeting began at 10am with Acting President Chuck Haver calling the meeting to order.

Chuck gave a brief talk on the past of the organization and what the future hopefully will hold for the membership. Craig Stanley the Association’s Treasurer then gave the Treasurer’s Report and a brief talk on the financial wellness of the Association.
The meeting then moved to filling the positions of the officers for the next year. The President’s position had recently been vacated by Randy Braucher.

Craig Stanley nominated Chuck Haver with Buddy’s Home Furnishings franchise BREG Group to fill the position of President. It was voted on and unanimously voted for Mr. Haver to fill the position.

This then left the VP position open and Lisa Homberger with Buddy’s Home Furnishings franchise Preferred Sales and Leasing was nominated and voted into the VP Position.

Craig Stanley with Stanley’s Get it Today has been serving as the Treasurer. It was decided to combine the positions of Secretary and Treasurer into one position. Craig was nominated and unanimously voted in to fill the position of Secretary/Treasurer.

The group then got an update from Jim Newport of Kelly, Newport and Associates the Associations legislative liaison. Mr. Newport discussed the legislative environment within the state and any issues that could potentially affect the industry.

Next, the membership gave the floor to Scott Lesher and Mary Keel from the Oklahoma Department of Consumer Credit. Mr. Lesher spoke on the role of the state agency in regulating and following up on the Rent to Own Law in Oklahoma.

Keel informed the group that last year they had only received one complaint on the industry in Oklahoma and that after the agency spoke with and explained to the person filing the complaint it was handled with no further action was taken. She commended the industry in Oklahoma on a “Job well done.”

The meeting wrapped up the day with vendor presentations from Denise Williams of Nationwide Southwest, James Selby from C&L Supply, Mikhy Smith from DSI Systems and from Lanai with Benefit Marketing.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
