Rent-to-own News - Franchise council elections, vendor reception kick off ColorTyme Summer Meeting

June 16, 2011

FAC Chairman Mark Childers

Keeping a yearly tradition alive, the ColorTyme Franchise Advisory Council (FAC), gathered for a meeting prior to the start of ColorTyme’s 2011 Summer Meeting where the company welcomed franchisees, vendors, family and friends to Olympic Valley, California.

The FAC, including newly elected members, met at the Resort at Squaw Creek to hold elections, conduct a constituent draft and review franchise programs.

In the elections that followed, the group re-elected Mark Childers -- who owns stores in Fairbanks, Wassilla and Anchorage -- to continue his role as chairman and former Secretary Steve Dwyer was named vice chairman -- a new position created by the FAC. The FAC also elected new member James Stephens as secretary.

“The ColorTyme Summer Meeting is one of the most important gatherings of our FAC,” said Albert Kohut, vice president of operations for ColorTyme. “This is the time when new members are introduced, positions are decided and important business is discussed. This year’s FAC is a strong group, and I have no doubt each member will represent our franchisees with the highest character and respect.”

Made up of 10 members, the ColorTyme FAC serves as a key collaborative fulcrum balancing franchisee and corporate interests. In Wednesday’s half-day meeting, members listened to corporate presentations and assigned new franchisee constituents for the term.

The 2011 FAC members are:  Ray Bird, Mark Childers, Steve Dwyer, Eddie Edwards, Bruce Emory, John Fornero, Chris Higgs, David Pagano, Richard Pannell and James Stephens.

A Vendor Appreciation Cocktail Reception held at the Resort at Squaw Creek kicked off the summer meeting.

“The cocktail reception is just one way that we thank all the ColorTyme vendors for exceeding our expectations,” said Rhonda Davis, director of sales for ColorTyme. “Each and every vendor does so much for our franchisees in offering them the best products and prices. With the help of our vendors, our Summer Meeting is a first-class event.”

ColorTyme vendors were honored at the Vendor Appreciation Cocktail Reception held prior to the Welcome Reception on Wednesday evening. Attending were representatives from ArchBrook Laguna, Ashley Furniture, Benefit Marketing Solutions, Citibank, High Touch, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Perdue Woodworks, Rent-A-Center National Products Service, Serta, SLR International, Sony VAIO, Texas Capital, Toshiba, Twin-Star/Classic Flame, Welton USA and Whirlpool.

“I’m excited to be here and meet with franchisees and fellow vendors in such a beautiful location,” said Jamee Thompson, representative for Serta National Rental Accounts. “I’ve been coming to the Summer Meetings since I was 15 years old when my dad worked for ColorTyme. Now, as a vendor, I look forward to each meeting just as much as I did back then.”

The Welcome Reception that followed featured a dinner set against breathtaking scenery, and a photographer was on site to capture pictures of franchisees and their families.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
