Rent-to-own News - Rent-2-Own stores spread charity around Ohio

December 16, 2009

Everyone at Countryside Rent-2-Own expected a big number. But this year, that number was 43 percent larger than what company president Mike Tissot expected.

And when he’s surprised, it's bound to be big.

For several years, Bainbridge, Ohio-based Countryside Rent-2-Own stores have selected a week in December during which a percentage of deliveries or growth in potential rent has been given to charitable causes.

This year, Tissot’s pledge was that 50 percent of the potential rent gain during the week of Dec. 7 would be spread among three organizations important to the community and his company.

When all the reports were in, the company had almost doubled it's business over the previous year generating close to $42,000. Approximately $21,000 will now be divided among three charitable organizations this holdiay.

“That is a very healthy donation to three of the best places I can think of that do some great works," Tissot said. "We are proud to be able to make this contribution this year."

Countryside Rent-2-Own will divide its donation between the following organizations.

1) SATH -- KAMP Dovetail. KAMP (Kids And Motivated People) Dovetail is a volunteer run non-profit summer camp sponsored by Supplementary Assistance to The Handicapped (SATH) a non-profit organization that serves children with disabilities in Highland and surrounding counties of Ohio. Many Countryside employees volunteered at the camp last year.

2) Butler Springs Christian Youth Camp. Butler Springs Christian Camp provides people of all ages with a place to engage in a variety of activities designed to be fun and educational. It's mission is to provide a stepping stone toward spiritual growth and challenge Christians to a broader lifetime service through bible-centered programs in a nature oriented setting.

3) St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  The world’s leading children’s research hospital where all patients are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay.

Each of the 25 Rent-2-Own store managers was asked to select one of those groups as the recipient of the cash equivalent of half their store’s potential rent gain.

Countryside Rent-2-Own operates 25 stores in Ohio and Kentucky.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
