Rent-to-own News - Kansas dealers brush up on legal, legislative issues
October 3, 2008
Collections and employment issues top the Kansas Association of Rental Dealers (KARD) annual meeting October 14 and 15 at the Prairie Band Casino in Mayetta, Kansas.
Around 50 dealers representing 10 rent-to-own companies are expected at the event which begins with a cocktail reception October 14 and continues with a day full of educational updates and presentations on issues ranging from employment laws to the rent-to-own legislative initiative to the virtues of various high definition televisions.
Kansas attorney Vaughn Burkholder, an employment specialist, will lead the discussion on employment laws facing Kansas dealers, followed by a presentation by James McAlpine of Nationwide Marketing Group -- the organization sponsoring the meeting.

APRO Executive Director Bill Keese will update members on pending federal rent-to-own legislation and the upcoming 2009 APRO Legislative Conference April 21-23. The House version of the bill reached an industry record this week signing on its 99th co-sponsor which, including bill sponsor William Lacy Clay, raises total sponsorship of the bill to 100.
Through APRO grassroots leadership, 37 new co-sponsors have joined the bill since the conclusion of this year's legislative conference in February.
APRO Legal Counsel Ed Winn III will update attendees on legal issues affecting the industry including "collection do's and don'ts" as well as on state and federal legislative activity.
Shawn Keefe of DSI will close out the meeting with a presentation outlining the differences between various models of high definition televisions including DLP, Plasma and LCD.
"We are a very fortunate state with people who had the foresight on legislation to get a very good law passed here in Kansas," said KARD Vice President Gloria Homeier of A Full House. "Through good communication we hope we've built our association into a strong organization and we hope to keep it a strong organization. The way to do that is to keep the lines of communication open and that's what our meetings are about."
Homeier is also a member of the APRO Board of Directors.
Jess Fisher of Hometown Rental Purchase is KARD's president and Shaun Rush with Triad Leasing LLC is the association's treasurer/secretary.
